What Makes Wine More Protective Against Cholesterol And Coronary Heart Disease?

In recent years, scientists have concluded without doubt that many human diseases such as heart disease, cancer and ill-effects of the aging process can be caused or stimulated by a ravenous group of chemicals called free radicals. They act to create oxidative inflammatory damage in tissues such as blood vessels(Clogged arteries) and in joints called Rheumatics or Arthritis and in localised cells called benign growths or Systemic fully-blown cancers .

In this scenario, there is however a knight-in-shining-armour that jumps to the rescue and purges these ever hungry little killers. The name of our crusader is Antioxidants.

Without getting too technical, the oxidation process in our bodies is crucial for health, without it, for instance, we would not be able to extract energy from our food. However if there are too many free radicals in our bodies, this can be very harmful.

Our body has its own defences against free radicals, in the form of enzymes that are able to turn the hungry little tissue-devouring sharks into harmless water but sometimes our body’s natural defence mechanisms can’t cope.

Other times, external events can cause huge increases of free radicals within our bodies, such as x-rays, cigarette smoke and exposure toother toxic substances. And so a surge of free radicals can swamp our defences and illnesses may take place.

So what does oxidation and free radicals have to do with heart disease?

Low density lipoprotein, commonly know as “bad” LDL, can penetrate and gather against the inner walls of our arteries which under certain conditions, form fatty streaks and plaque.

Taken alone, LDL particles aren’t so dangerous it seems, however, when attacked by free radicals they turn into dangerous and somewhat aggressive cells, capable of actually penetrating and harming the smooth inner walls of our arteries through localised inflammation thereof, So Oxidized LDL is known to be the culprit in stimulating atherosclerosis, heart disease and stroke.

Antioxidants, as the name suggests, help stop the oxidation process, which are the results of free radicals doing their stuff and Most antioxidant research has been carried out on vitamins (A, E, beta carotene) but quite a lot of work has also been done on the healthy benefits of red wine.

While most research on red wine has been done in relation to coronary heart disease, it seems that the benefits of wine don’t stop there.

Fo instance, Red wine contains a wide range of flavanoids; these are the chemicals that give the wine its particular taste, color and character, making one different from another. Many of these flavanoids act like antioxidants.

Perhaps the forerunner of wine research was carried out by a one Serge Renaud, who discovered the French Paradox, which suggested that wine was the decisive factor in protecting the people in southern France from their very high fat diets and ultimately coronary heart disease.

Even if these people do eat large quantities of high fat cheese, pâté, and salami they have some of the lowest rates of heart disease in the world.

Another study, statistical rather than practical, by a Professor Grey of the Swiss University of Bern focussed on the low, medium and high coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality figures of the World Health Organization.

He found from among the high mortality areas were Finland and Scotland, the middle areas included Ireland, and the low CHD areas included Spain, Italy and France. He then compared heart attack rates with antioxidant levels in blood samples taken from men living in those areas.

His results showed that high antioxidant levels, in particular vitamin E, coincided with low death rates of heart disease. Moreover that low vitamin E levels were 94% more accurate in predicting CHD rates than were cholesterol levels or blood pressure figures!

Apart from diet, the high CHD regions drink very little, if any wine, whereas the low regions traditionally accompany their meals most days with wine. But it certainly seems strange that two much studied cities; Glasgow in Scotland and Toulouse in France show many similarities and yet many differences. People of both cities eat tremendous amounts of high fat foods, traditionally take little exercise and drink alcohol.

The surprising difference is that while the people of Glasgow have one of the highest rates of CHD in the world, the fortunate people of Toulouse have one of the lowest.

Traditionally beer and spirits are the preferred drinks in Glasgow, while the folks in Toulouse drink red wine. (Of course the fact that the weather patterns in both areas are poles apart had nothing to do with mortality rates either… Ahemmm.)

So, it has been suggested that drinking in moderation together with meals is beneficial, while binge drinking at bars in the evening is harmful… duhh! It seems the southern Europeans don’t drink for the alcohol buzz, but just as a pleasant accompaniment to their meals.

At first the large heart institutions such as the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association ignored both antioxidants and frowned upon wine. While it is clear that it could be potentially dangerous for a physician to recommend his patients start drinking alcohol, it is also strange that they pretended for so many years to ignore the evidence.

Roll on a few years now and even if they don’t promote the taking of vitamin pills; antioxidants and free radicals they are now more recognized as factors in disease. Though, according to the AHA “There is no scientific proof that drinking wine or any other alcoholic beverage can replace conventional measures.”

No direct comparison trials have been done to determine the specific effect of wine or other alcohol on the risk of developing heart disease or stroke.

The costs of clinical trials is so high that only the pharmaceutical industry have the financial clout to invest in them — invest being the correct word.

Five Basic Rules of Sports Safety (Growing Up Smart Body Fact # 22)

August afternoons sizzle in Southwest Missouri. I remember how hot and thirsty I was after 2 hours of baseball that day. I remember Mike falling to the ground near second base, someone going for help, and Mike’s dad carrying him from the field.

“Heat stroke,” his dad told me a few days later. “You boys need to drink more water,” he said matter-of-factly. The advice was too late for Mike. I first saw him again at school several weeks later. Mike was different. He walked with a limp.

Last summer I saw Mike at our high school reunion. Thirty years had passed. I recognized him right away. He walked with a limp.

Playing sports is fun; getting hurt is not. Injuries like Mike’s last a lifetime. Here are five basic rules for sports-related safety. They will help you stay healthy and active for a long time. Take care of your body. Don’t be like Mike.

Warm Up and Stretch: Before exercising, whether it’s a pick-up game of basketball or the soccer finals, take a few minutes to prepare your body for the workout that’s coming. Warm up by jogging or doing jumping jacks to increase your blood flow and muscle temperature. Finish getting ready by doing some slow, gradual stretching to lengthen your muscles to prevent muscle pulls and tears. Take some time after your game to stretch a little so your muscles don’t tighten up and hurt later on. Talk to your coach to get some pointers on the right way to stretch before and after exercising.

Use the Right Equipment: Make sure you wear the right protective gear for the sport you’re playing. Almost every sport has specially designed gear to protect you. Talk with your parents or your coach to know what gear you need. A different style of helmet is worn in baseball, biking, skateboarding, football, hockey, and skating. Wearing cleats helps your feet grip the ground and avoid ankle and leg injuries when playing football, baseball, softball, and soccer. Other sports require pads (such as wrist, elbow, and knee guards); eye protection; mouth guards; or an athletic supporter (for boys). And don’t forget to wear the gear correctly. If you don’t fasten the strap on your helmet, it will fall off when you need it most. It doesn’t matter whether you’re practicing or playing the big game. Wear your protective gear!

Follow the Rules: Every game has its own set of rules. That’s so everybody playing knows what to expect. In football, it’s okay to tackle the guy with the ball. But what if someone tackled you in basketball? Not only is it against the rules, there’s a pretty good chance you’d be hurt. When everyone knows the rules of the game—what’s legal and what’s not—fewer people are hurt. Games are always more fun when you know and play by the rules.

Don’t Play If You’re Injured
: Sure it’s important not to let your teammates and coach down, but if you’re hurt, no one expects you to keep on playing. Playing after you’ve been hurt will probably make the injury even worse and put you on the sideline for a long time. The same goes for playing again before an injury has time to heal completely. Be honest with your coach if you’ve been hurt and follow their advice about when to play again.

Drink Plenty of Water: Sweating makes the water level in your body go down. And when you’re playing sports, it happens really fast. Just like a car radiator, you want to keep the water level from dropping too low. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to begin drinking water. Take a bottle of water with you to soccer practice or to play in the park. Drink up.

Vitamin Deficiency Epidemic In America

Best Vitamin Supplements. In the 21st century, in one of the most developed nations in the world, we have a vitamin deficiency of epidemic proportions. How is this possible, you may ask. We are extremely well fed, many of us take multi-vitamins, we drink our milk and eat our vegetables (most of the time). Furthermore, the US government has recommended daily allowances for vitamins that many of us try to get every day. How could we possibly be deficient in a vitamin?

Despite the efforts of the government and food science industries to make sure we have plenty of everything, studies show that 40-60% of the entire US population is deficient in vitamin D.

Historically, vitamin D deficiency resulted in rickets. Scientists determined the minimum amount of vitamin D and the government set the US Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA). Vitamin D was added to milk so the average child drinking the amount of milk recommended by the average pediatrician was guaranteed to get enough of the vitamin to prevent rickets, and we all were to live happily ever after.

It turns out Vitamin D is a critical nutrient for preventive maintenance of all of our body tissues, and recent research has shown the amount needed is far higher than the current US RDA.** Allowing your body to be deficient in vitamin D is like never changing the oil in your car. It runs just fine for a while, and then things simply begin to break down. Research has linked low levels of vitamin D to colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, kidney cancer, type I and II diabetes, metabolic syndrome, melanoma, cardiovascular diseases (including heart attack, stroke and high blood pressure), periodontal disease, all autoimmune disorders, pre-eclampsia, difficult birthing, autism, and other diseases.** Let’s be clear: low vitamin D does not CAUSE these diseases, but studies overwhelmingly show that people with these diseases have low serum (blood) levels of vitamin D, and that when the vitamin D level is brought into a normal range the prognosis is often 50% (or more) better than when the vitamin D level remains low.

How did we get so deficient? There are few dietary sources of vitamin D, including cod liver oil, egg yolks, butter, liver, oily fish, some fortified breakfast cereals, and milk. We tend to avoid strongly-flavored fishy foods in this culture, and we tend to minimize consumption of eggs and butter to lower our cholesterol. Vitamin D is manufactured in the skin from cholesterol, and requires Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation for its synthesis. With the increased use of high SPF sunscreens (which completely block UVB radiation) and the increased use of cholesterol-lowering medication, we have severely limited our ability to manufacture vitamin D. Even without sunscreen, most of the US is far enough north of the equator that we receive limited amounts of UVB during most of the year. It is virtually impossible to get enough UVB to make vitamin D during the winter if you are north of the 35th parallel (think Atlanta or San Diego).

The US RDA for vitamin D is 400IU/day. Remember, the RDA for any nutrient is the MINIMUM amount required to prevent known deficiency disease, NOT the optimal amount needed for health. For years, the only known vitamin D deficiency disease has been rickets, and this amount of vitamin D is sufficient to prevent rickets. However, the latest research shows that for the disease prevention effect of vitamin D to be present, the blood level needs to be in the 60-80ng/ml range, more than double the current low end of the “normal” laboratory range for this nutrient.** To keep your blood vitamin D at this level requires 2000-2400IU/day from all sources for adults, 2000IU/day for children under 12, and 1000-1800IU/day for infants less than 1 year.

Vitamin D is fat soluble, so can’t you get too much of it? The answer is yes, but you need a lot. Studies have demonstrated no toxicity with supplementation of vitamin D at levels as high as 20,000IU per day, so the levels recommended are well below the toxic dose for this vitamin.**

So, how do you get 2000IU of vitamin D per day? Most milk in the US has vitamin D added to it, so if you drink milk you are getting some vitamin D. 10-15 minutes of sun exposure on the arms and legs during the peak hours for UVB radiation (10am-2pm), without sunscreen, allows your body to make about half the vitamin D it needs. However, if you live north of the 35th parallel you will be unable to get enough UVB exposure to make enough vitamin D during much of the year. The good news is that vitamin D supplements exist and are relatively inexpensive. I recommend starting with 1000IU per day in a supplement for most people. If you don’t drink milk and rarely get out in the sun, 2000-2500IU per day would be appropriate. Therapeutic doses can be much higher, and require periodic monitoring of your blood levels to make sure you don’t overdose.

Human Growth Hormone Bodybuilding

Human growth hormone bodybuilding: all you wanted to know about HGH and gaining bulk

The Human Growth Hormone, HGH, comes from the pituitary gland and is a hormonal secretion that is essentially a polypeptide aiding development and overall health in the human body. When this HGH hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland is less than the normal levels required by the body, there is slow or no development in an individual; this often shifts the focus from exercise and diet control for simply regulating tissue growth, cellular repair, energy levels, fat loss to using enhancers that boost human growth hormone productivity and thus, help in additional muscle growth for HGH bodybuilding.

Advances in the latest supplements for HGH bodybuilding

Since it has widely been acknowledged as the master hormone, HGH bodybuilding purposes have also gained in popularity, as the world has seen the recorded results of many a muscle bound Rambo and severely underdeveloped children benefiting from secretions from this anterior pituitary gland. These observations and feelings of awe over what a shot of HGH can do for building up bulk, converting fat to leans muscle and helping in adding inches to a person’s height while giving a sense of general well-being by keeping depression and stress at bay, but with side-effects of physical and psychological problems (cardiovascular dysfunction for one) is what led to the advances in bringing to the market safer, side-effect free, herbal supplements for HGH bodybuilding and raising energy levels. While the earliest form of human growth hormone bodybuilding supplement was in the form of injections, which were very costly and needed to be supervised by a qualified medical expert during administration to avoid undesirable results from an overdose, scientists have worked along creating synthetic HGH bodybuilding supplements, which have the same potent amino acids as the HGH injections but with considerably slower delivery mechanism for reaching it to the user’s bloodstream.

Thus, while HGH bodybuilding injections work rapidly to release the benefits of this fountain of youth and vitality formulation, their milder counterparts, like HGH pills, powders (athletes and weightlifters alike are known to take powders mixed in milk or water before and after training sessions for that extra pep) and sprays, usually take 3 months to 6 months to show the results the shots would in one third the time.

Thus, the advancements in the field of HGH bodybuilding supplements have been to raise the potency levels of delivery mode by concentrating on regulating the body’s metabolism for an increased potential for adding bulk, while elevating growth hormone productivity to a consistent level-minus the side-effects of steroid. Of course, these human growth hormone bodybuilding supplements do not come cheap as one pays for the high quality of reliability and safety, but what makes the powders and sprays so popular today is that these are legal options and easily available, plus without the fuss of a prescription.

HGH bodybuilding: Therapeutic Effects

The effective use of human growth hormone bodybuilding supplements used judiciously has many benefits for those in the muscle-up business for real: quality products help decrease recovery time from exercise, muscle strain/injury and regeneration of tissues in degenerative diseases apart from giving the high of looking good with renewed vigor.
